On the right side of the carb, towards the front, , you'll see a round access cover held on by 3 screws (Transient....?), in front of that, there is normally a brass plug (looks like a brass circle recessed even with the carb) with a little dimple in the middle. They come from the factory with a splash of white paint on them (as with body bolts atht are torqued- the paint indicates that a mechanic checked to make sure the plug was in or that a bolt was torqued, etc....). As this is a common place to tinker, the plug may be gone, but then you should see a straight-tip screw slot (brass if it is the original, buggered-up would also be an option....). If there is a deep (half to 3/4 inch), threaded hole there, you are missing the adjustment screw.
If you really want to get rid of the backfire, remove the white spacer in the carb and see if that does it.
